Abstract

Abstract

Background: Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) is a standard medium widely used for the isolation and growth of fungi. However, its relatively high cost and reliance on commercial media have encouraged the development of alternative media based on natural ingredients. Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) have a high protein and carbohydrate content, making them a potential source of nutrients in fungal culture media. Objective: This study aims to determine the potential of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) as an alternative culture medium for the growth of Candida sp. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental method. The culture medium was made from soybeans with varying concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60%. Each medium was inoculated with Candida sp. isolates and incubated at 28–30°C. Results: The diameter of the colonies formed increased gradually, from 1.4 mm at a concentration of 10% to 2.6 mm at a concentration of 60%. Increasing the concentration of soybean extract was followed by an increase in colony diameter. Conclusion: Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)-based media can support the growth of Candida sp. Thus, soybean media have the potential to be a more economical alternative culture medium, although further development and standardization are required to match the performance of Sabouraud Dextrose Agar.
